WHOVILLE CHRISTMAS in K5

Wednesday, December 16th, all kindergarten classes will enjoy fun activities centered around the story of the Grinch and how his heart grew at Christmas! We will play math and literacy games, do math STEAM activities, make ornaments, and have a feast!  We will even take pictures in a photo booth.

Your child is welcome to dress up for this fun day!  Ideas include: wearing bright

colors, trying out some Who hairdos, or wearing antlers like the Grinch’s dog (Max) to name a few.  Need some inspiration?  Check out these pictures:

Week of December 7-11

This is our favorite time of year!  We love teaching your precious children the TRUE meaning of Christmas.  We understand that Kindergarteners do not understand that we still have several weeks before the big holiday... it is important to keep their routines as normal as possible on a school day.  It is also important to remind them to be their best and follow the classroom rules.

This week, we sent home a letter explaining our Kindergarten service project.  We are challenging them to do some “good deeds'' for their family, friends, neighbors and/or complete strangers.  Our goal is to let our light shine BRIGHT this holiday season. Please fill out the red hearts with your child’s name and their good deed.  We will be hanging these hearts on a giant Grinch in our hallway!  Thank you for your support and cooperation.  We value this partnership so much!

This week we learned:

Bible- Joseph and the Battle at Jericho

Phonics- Rhyming words, C & K phonics rules, attributes of a sentence

F & F Reading/writing- Grinch theme

Math- sorting, counting and graphing

Social Studies-  Economics- goods & services, wants vs. needs

The PTF Christmas Shoppe is coming December 9th (Dixon & Childers) & December 10th (Holbrook & Kulp).  Students can shop for their family members while raising money for our awesome PTF!  This is a popular event for all the children. They really enjoy picking out a little something special for their loved ones.   A flyer was sent out this week with a shopping list.

12/16 - Whoville Christmas Day is coming soon!  Kindergarten students and teachers will dress up as their favorite Who character. We will play learning games, make crafts, watch the movie and celebrate with a Whoville feast!  We will be sending out a sign-up genius link next week to help with needed donations.  Thank you in advance for your willingness to help with these fun & educational activities.

12/18 - Last day before Christmas break, Half Day.

01/05 - First day back from Christmas break.

  • Don’t forget to have your child do as many good deeds as possible this week.  Record them on your “Good Deeds”  heart.  Remember to send them in so we can put them on the big Grinch in the hall!

  • The weather is getting colder!  Don’t forget to send in a coat each day with your child.  Please write your child’s name on all outerwear and accessories.

  • If your child wears the new Christmas NCCS shirt on any day other than Friday, he/she must wear uniform pants.  NO jeans except on Friday, please!

Week of November 30 - December 4

WOW- who doesn’t love a parade?  What a fabulous way to end a busy week and start off our Thanksgiving break!  The kiddos were so excited to be a part of the parade and to see their faces light up when they saw their families made it all worthwhile!  Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to support our special event!

This week we learned:

Bible- Moses and the Red Sea, Ten Commandments

Phonics- Making CVC words, recognizing attributes of a sentence, reading phrases and/or sentences.

F & F Reading/writing- Thanksgiving stories and creative writing

Social Studies-  The 1st Thanksgiving with the Native Americans and the Pilgrims.  International Geographical Information Service Day was Wednesday.  We used our map skills to look at various maps, create a map, go on a scavenger hunt and more!  This was a super fun

in-house field trip!

*An important blog correction- You can access your child’s “Teach your Monster to Read” account by clicking on the student bookmark section not through Google classroom.  Click under your teacher’s class and type your child’s first name.  We apologize for the confusion!

*If you need to check out your child for an appointment, please do so by 2:00 pm. We have so much going on at the end of the day, it is very difficult to stop and walk a child up to the front of the school!  Thank you!

*The weather is getting chilly but we will still go outside for recess!  Please make sure your child has the proper coat, gloves, hats, etc.  Please write your child’s name on all these items so that we can locate if necessary.

*Important dates:

December 9th & 10th - The PTF Christmas Shoppe is coming! Students can shop for their family members while raising money for our awesome PTF!  This is a popular event for all the children. Friday, November 13, 2020

Please check our upcoming dates regularly.  We have a lot of fun activities planned this holiday season and we do not want you to miss out!

All of our Kindergarten students have been signed up for a fun, interactive reading program called “Teach Your Monster To Read”.  Students can access it on their Google classroom account.  This is a great way to increase their vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.  They can “level up” and play games so it is a great incentive for those reluctant readers!

We are very thankful and blessed to be working with you & your precious children.  We hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving with family and friends.  We will see you back to school on November 30th.

Report cards went home today in your child’s Friday Folder.  After you have reviewed it, please remember to sign the white copy and send it back in your child’s homework binder.  The gray original report card is yours to keep.

The STEAM Thanksgiving Parade will be on Friday, November 20th from 10-11am.  Parents are welcome to come watch!  You may set up chairs around the carline/parking lot after 9:30 am.   Kindergarteners have made Spanish inspired instruments  and learned a traditional song.  There has been a change in wardrobe for the parade.  Please dress your child in their LS blue shirt and jeans!  We want you to be able to spot K5 easily!  After the parade, we will enjoy some yummy desserts and you may check your child out early if you’d like.

Week of November 9 - 13

It is hard to believe that we have finished our first Trimester.  You will be receiving your child’s report card on Friday, November 13th.  Please sign the white copy and return it to your child’s teacher.  The gray copy is for you to keep for your records.

As the second trimester begins, there will be a lot more reading expected of your Kindergartener on a daily basis.  It is important that they continue to practice their sight words daily as this helps improve their confidence and increase their vocabulary.  Please remember that all sight words assessments are cumulative from the beginning of the school year!  Your child will also start bringing home reading books from their groups...our goal is for the books to be read several times for fluency and comprehension.  These books belong to NCCS so please take extra care with them and return them promptly.

Next Tuesday, we will be doing a Community Service Project for all Lower School students during chapel.  Kindergarten students should wear their blue Kindergarten t-shirt and jeans on Tuesday, November 10th.
